What's happening in high school sports this week:

Tennis

The 5A and 4A UIL state tournaments will begin at 9 a.m. on May 5-6 at the World of Tennis at Lakeway in Austin.

Early learning. Southlake Carroll’s Megan Horter may only be a freshman, but she plays beyond her years. Horter, the No. 2 girls 16-and-under tennis player in Texas, advanced to state and extended her undefeated record to 20-0 this spring with a 6-3, 6-4 win over Flower Mound Marcus' Emily Mathis in the Class 5A Region I tennis tournament finals Saturday at the McLeod Tennis Complex at Texas Tech University. If the 20-0 record didn’t impress you enough, maybe this will: She hasn’t lost a set this spring either.

Playing his way in.Fort Worth Boswell’s Chris Copenhaver defeated Fort Worth Southwest’s Igor Ozegovic 6-4, 6-3 in a play-in game to take the second seed from the Region I 4A boys singles regional tournament. Copenhaver defeated Denton’s Hee Won Kim 6-0, 6-2 in the consolation match and got a break when Ozegovic fell to Wichita Falls Rider’s Chase Curry in the finals 7-5, 6-3.

The road to state.Alvarado’s Daniel Kil and Megan Billings are headed to the 4A state tournament despite losing to Wichita Falls Rider’s Keith Terrell and Hannah Macha in the mixed doubles finals at the Region I 4A tennis tournament. Kil and Billings knocked off the top-seeded team from Wichita Falls in the semifinals and then lost 3-6, 6-4, 6-3 in the finals.

Golf

The boys and girls 5A state tournament are May 8-9 at the Jimmy Clay Golf Course in Austin at 11 a.m. The 4A tournaments are May 5-6 at the same time and location. The top two teams and the top two individuals in the top six but not from an advancing team qualify for the state tournament.
