SPECIAL TO THE STAR-TELEGRAM
Looking ahead at this week’s boys and girls high school sports action:
Golf
Regional meets will be held April 21-26. State meets for 1A, 2A and 4A are on May 5-6. State meets for 3A and 5A are May 8-9.
The Class 5A Region I tournament is at Texas Tech’s Rawls Golf Course. The 4A Region I tournaments are in San Angelo, with the girls at Bentwood Country Club and boys at Quicksand Golf Course.
Second helpings. Natalie Reeves has accomplished a lot in two years and counting at Euless Trinity. It seems she’s nowhere near the end of her reign on the links. As a freshman, Reeves won the District 7-5A golf title, placed third at regionals and was tied for seventh at state. This year she won the district crown by a mere 30 strokes with a score of 77-78-15 at Riverside Golf Club in Grand Prairie.
“As a freshman I think she was a little taken back,” first-year Trinity golf coach Barry Fuller said, “but at the same time (do) you really know what you’ve accomplished at that point in time, as great of a feat as it was?
“I think she looks back and thinks that she could have done better. I think that’s her desire this year. She expects herself to do quite well. From a coach's perspective it’s not an arrogant thing, it’s what (she) expects of herself.”
Fuller said a big reason Reeves is so successful is because of the unwavering support of her family.
“Part of it is her family backing,” he said. “Her parents do a great job of making sure she has the necessary tools and obviously the money that’s involved in getting private lessons.”
Reeves has had to juggle those lessons and practice with a lengthy soccer season, which ended at the end of March when the Lady Trojans bowed out in the first round. Fuller said he starts his spring season about the time soccer is hitting its midway point.
“I guess you could say she’s that good of an athlete that she was able to maintain a pretty good performance in both sports,” Fuller said. “Did I think it hurt her? Maybe a little bit.”
Judging from her district performance heading into regionals Monday in Lubbock, it hasn’t hurt her that much.
“I think she knows she has been given a special talent and she is willing to work at it to maintain it and excel in that area,” Fuller said.
Who knows? Who knows what would have happened had the District 8-5A girls golf tournament been decided after its originally scheduled 36 holes and not the 27 holes bad weather allowed. Who knows?
What we do know is, through 27 holes, Arlington Lamar’s Brittany Robbins shot a 136 to beat Cedar Hill’s Brittany Riewe by one stroke for the district championship. The district title capped a seven-place improvement for Robbins from the previous district tournament.
“It is a combination of people leaving, her just buckling down and mentally preparing in the summer and just overall maturing,” coach Debbie Hanlan said. “(Arlington) Martin had a big group of seniors that left. Mentally she was much better prepared attitude-wise and when something was wrong she just blew it off.”
