Looking ahead at this week's boys and girls high school sports action:

Soccer:

Southlake Carroll (22-4-4) defeated Hebron, 3-2, in a shootout in the Class 5A Region I Championship at Pennington Field on Saturday. The Lady Dragons will be joined in Austin by Houston Clear Lake, which has only allowed one goal in the postseason, Plano East and San Antonio, which hasn’t allowed a goal in the postseason. The semifinals will be held at 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. on April 10. The final is at 11 a.m. on April 12.

Baseball

4-5A is there for the taking. Just when you think it’s Mansfield’s district title to lose, the Tigers (7-2) get beat by Mansfield Summit (6-3), 1-0, on Friday and lose to Burleson (6-4) on Saturday.

Just when it looks like Paschal would benefit the most from Mansfield’s week, the Panthers (7-3), go 1-1 with a loss to Burleson. Despite its two big wins, Burleson is still in a three-way tie for fourth place in the district. Mansfield is first, followed by Paschal, Summit, Weatherford (6-4), Burleson and Granbury.

There are three weeks left in the regular season.

Here’s a look at the key games this week:

Burleson at Summit, 7:30 p.m., April 8

Weatherford at Granbury, 7:30 p.m., April 8

Weatherford vs. Paschal, 7:30 p.m., April 11

Martin marching on. Arlington Martin is good. That’s no secret. The Warriors are 21-3 overall, haven’t lost since March 15 (7-4 to Tyler Lee), and have a two-game lead over Arlington in District 8-5A with an 8-0 record. Martin doesn’t just overpower people with its sticks, which it can do (the Warriors have scored eight or more runs in 16 games). The Warriors can also shut you down at the plate. On March 26, Shane Griffin threw a complete-game no-hitter against a good-hitting Arlington Bowie club. He struck out nine of the 21 batters and didn’t allow a walk. Two infield errors were the only difference in a perfect game. In total, Martin’s pitching staff has seven shutouts. One of those came in a 9-0 win over Arlington on March 12, which was smack-dab in the middle of the Colts’ five-game losing streak. Arlington (10-13) has now won five straight after its 12-0 win over DeSoto on April 4 and has taken sole advantage of second place with a 6-2 record. It’ll get another opportunity at Martin on April 8 at home at 7 p.m. Lamar (5-3) is close behind in third with Duncanville (4-4) and Bowie (3-4) fourth and fifth respectively.

Second place anyone? It’s shaping up to be a race for the proverbial silver medal in District 7-5A. Hurst L.D. Bell (14-6) is 8-0 in district and hasn’t lost since March 8 to Keller Fossil Ridge (17-6), which is 10-0 in 6-4A. The Blue Raiders have a three-game lead over Dallas Jesuit (9-7) and South Grand Prairie (10-11), which are both 5-3. Bell hosts Jesuit on April 8 at 7 p.m., and will face Irving MacArthur (11-11, 5-4) on April 11 at 7 p.m. Irving (12-6, 4-4) and Trinity (7-14, 3-5), which came closest to beating Bell on April 1 in a 5-4 loss, are still in heavy contention for the playoffs. South Grand Prairie and Irving play at Irving on April 8. Jesuit hosts Trinity on April 11.
