Softball

The Lady Kangaroos are rolling. Weatherford took Mansfield Legacy lightly the first time they played on Feb. 29 and it resulted in a 1-0 loss.

The Lady Broncos had the Lady Kangaroos' attention on March 28 in what coach Phillip Beyer called a "statement" game as the second half of district got underway. Weatherford's statement was made in a 10-0 shutout, its seventh straight shutout in district.

"We are getting timely hitting and dominating pitching," Beyer said. "We are playing good defense."

Hannah Schnebly pitched a two-hitter for Weatherford and improved to 9-8 on the year. Mansfield coach Jay Harvill called her the best pitcher in the district and Beyer agrees.

"On paper we definitely do. She throws the hardest," he said. "She was the pitcher of the year in the district as a sophomore last year with 212 strikeouts.

Schnebly has yet to give up an earned run in district and has surrendered only one unearned run in 4-5A play.

"She's been on the varsity since she was a freshman and was the No. 1 pitcher last year. She definitely catches your eye, her parents are very supportive and she has private pitching lessons. There's not a team in the district that wouldn't take her."

The win moved Weatherford to 13-9 overall and 8-1 in district. Despite their recent dominance, the Lady Kangaroos are only one game up in the loss column on Burleson. Beyer said this is the tightest he's ever seen the district.

"This is my fifth year at Weatherford and it has always been the top two or three teams and then two or three were going to compete for the final spot," he said. "This year it is really not that way. Anybody can beat anybody on any night. Even with pitching like I am getting from Hannah, we aren't killing people. We are beating teams 2-0, 3-0. It comes down a lot of times to one play.

"I don't know how we rate with other districts. A lot of us struggle outside of district. That doesn't mean we are weaker. For whatever reason.we are 13-9 overall and 8-1 in district. It doesn't look real good when we get outside the district. It is more competitive than I have ever seen it. Our one loss is to Legacy, who is 3-7 in district. That just proves it right there."

Mansfield is 6-3 followed by North Crowley (6-4), Granbury (5-4), Mansfield Summit (5-4) and Fort Worth Paschal (3-6). Legacy dropped to 3-8.

Close and closer, but not quite close enough. There is no question that Joshua can play with Aledo (24-1, 8-0). Now beating the Ladycats, that's proved to be a different story.
