  The San Jose Sharks will try to extend their home points streak to 30 games tonight, as they return to HP Pavilion following a three- game road trip to host the New York Islanders, losers of 11 straight on the road.

  The Philadelphia Flyers will try to win for a third straight time on their season-long road trip, as they visit the Los Angeles Kings for tonight's contest at the Staples Center.

• Dallas Stars (16-15-5) at Edmonton Oilers (17-16-3), 10 p.m.

  A strong December has the once left-for-dead Dallas Stars back in the playoff hunt. They hope to begin the month of January on a roll and will visit the Edmonton Oilers for tonight's contest at Rexall Place.

  Indoors or outdoors, it doesn't matter to the Red Wings. Detroit aims for its third straight victory and sixth in the last eight games tonight when it travels to Minnesota to take on the Wild at Xcel Energy Center.

• Carolina Hurricanes (19-15-5) at Tampa Bay Lightning (10-17-10), 7:30 p.m.

  The Tampa Bay Lightning will try prevent their current losing streak from turning into another lengthy one tonight in a home matchup with the Carolina Hurricanes at St. Pete Times Forum.

• New York Rangers (23-13-3) at Washington Capitals (25-11-3), 7 p.m.

  It is no surprise that Washington has been almost impossible to beat during Alex Ovechkin's latest scoring tear. The Capitals will try for a sixth straight win overall and eighth consecutive victory at home tonight, when they welcome the New York Rangers to the Verizon Center.

  The Ottawa Senators will try to post consecutive victories for the first time in nearly a month when they visit the rival Toronto Maple Leafs for this evening's battle at Air Canada Centre.

• Calgary Flames (22-11-4) at Nashville Predators (17-17-3), 3 p.m.

  The first-place Calgary Flames will shoot for a fifth consecutive victory when they visit the Nashville Predators for this afternoon's encounter at Sommet Center.

• National Hockey League Game Capsules

  Zach Parise and Jamie Langenbrunner both registered a goal and an assist, as the New Jersey Devils downed the Montreal Canadiens, 4-1, at the Prudential Center. Brian Gionta and John Madden also scored for the Devils, who have won three of their last four games. Scott Clemmensen made 33 saves to earn his 14th win of the season. Max Pacioretty made his NHL debut and notched his first career goal for the Canadiens, who saw their three-game winning streak come to an end. Jaroslav Halak was lifted at the outset of the third period after he allowed three goals on 22 shots. Former first-rounder Marc Denis, making his Montreal debut, turned aside six shots over the final 20 minutes.
