Liberty Christian overwhelms Grace Prep

MANSFIELD — Argyle Liberty Christian wrapped up the TAPPS Division II, District 1 championship with a 49-29 victory over Arlington Grace Prep on Saturday at R.L. Anderson Stadium.

The Warriors showed their balance with quarterback Michael Smith directing an offense that used 13 runners and seven receivers.

Liberty Christian (7-3, 4-0 in district) will advance to the playoffs as the No. 1 seed from the district while Grace Prep (7-2, 2-2) goes into the playoffs against Dallas Parish Episcopal.

Smith and the Warriors scored seven touchdowns and built a 35-0 lead 16 minutes into the game.

Liberty Christian’s senior southpaw quarterback threw for three touchdowns and ran for another. Smith hit Chris Admire on a 60-yard pass and run to score the game’s first touchdown with 8:07 left in the first quarter. Liberty Christian covered 75 yards in four plays.

Smith finished 13-of-19 passing for 263 yards. Three of his passes went for touchdowns and four of his completions were for 25 yards or more.

Liberty Christian rolled up 462 yards of total offense while Grace Prep totaled 281 yards. Grace Prep had only three first downs at halftime and trailed 42-7 at intermission.

Grace Prep’s top weapon was senior running back Gabriel Goodman with 15 carries for 108 yards rushing and five receptions for 64 yards.

Chad Corley had a big game for Liberty Christian with touchdown receptions for 6 and 78 yards.
