Fort Worth Eastern Hills built an early lead and held off Fort Worth Polytechnic late for a 23-8 victory in the third-place game in a District 7-4A game Friday night at Farrington Field.
The Parrots cut the lead to 16-6 with 3:34 left in the game before Eastern Hills put its foot back on the gas to preserve the victory when senior running back Dominick King scored on an 80-yard run to seal the victory."I’m really proud of our kids because we started 0-5 and now we’ve won four of our last five games," first-year Eastern Hills coach Michael Prewitt said. "We set goals to get into the playoffs before the season and now we want to win a playoff game."In order for Eastern Hills (4-6) to win its first playoff game since 1999, it will have to defeat Mansfield Legacy in the first round in a Class 4A, Division II bi-district playoff at 7:30 p.m. Friday at Burleson’s Elk Stadium.Polytechnic (6-4) will be making its first postseason appearance since 1990 with a first-round game against Stephenville at 7 p.m. Thursday at Burleson. Eastern Hills took a 7-0 lead on its first possession when the Highlanders marched 77 yards in nine plays, scoring on a 1-yard run from junior quarterback Chris Gibson.Eastern Hills extended its lead to 14-0 later in the first quarter, when Gibson hooked up with senior wide receiver Quenton Cooper on a 5-yard scoring pass.The Highlanders defense also played well in the first half, holding Polytechnic to three first downs and 46 yards of total offense. And in the second half, the Eastern Hills defense recorded a safety and had interceptions by senior defensive backs Patrick Greer and Brandon Gray.Polytechnic cut the deficit to 8 when senior quarterback Damion Thornton scored on an 8-yard sneak, but that was as close as the Parrots got.
