ARLINGTON — Arlington Seguin starting quarterback D.J. Griffin enjoyed the view from the sidelines in the first half of Friday night’s District 7-4A finale at Wilemon Field.

The second half was a different story.

Joshua roared back from a 21-0 deficit and scored with no time on the clock, only to have a chance at overtime snuffed out when the extra-point kick was partially blocked by the Cougars.

Seguin held on to a 21-20 victory and will meet Arlington Heights in a bi-district playoff. The date and time will be determined next week.

With Griffin sitting out the game because to injury, understudy Martice McNeil went to work early.

He engineered the Cougars’ offense for 195 yards and three scores in the first half and finished the game with 206 all-purpose yards and a rushing touchdown.

Without Griffin, the Cougars (4-6, 4-3) stayed with the run more and McNeil showed he was up to the task, rushing 16 times for 150 yards.

Joshua (2-8, 0-7) was more aggressive in the second half. McNeil had only six carries for seven yards and the Owls’ offense began to gel behind third-string quarterback T.J. McGough.

After Joshua cut its deficit to seven in the fourth quarter and got a fourth-down stop with 2:21 remaining, McGough led a 72-yard drive that culminated with a 33-yard touchdown pass to wideout Michael Keeton, who hauled in a jump-ball throw.

But a strong defensive surge forced a low kick on the final PAT attempt.
