GRAPEVINE — The "Miracle Mustangs" added another thrilling feat to their turnaround season Friday night behind the leg of Alex Mueller.

The junior kicker hit a 42-yard field goal into the wind with 15 seconds left to lift Grapevine to a 26-23 victory against rival Colleyville Heritage at Mustang-Panther Stadium.

The long-range boot marked the second time this season Mueller has nailed a late game-winner.

The victory allowed Grapevine (6-4, 6-1) the No. 1 seed in the Class 5A Division II playoffs, which avoids powerhouse Southlake Carroll.

The Mustangs face Flower Mound Marcus on Saturday at Cowboys Stadium.

The Panthers (7-3, 5-2) face the Dragons in the opening round at 5 p.m. Saturday at Cowboys Stadium.

Colleyville Heritage trailed 23-7 at the half but mounted two touchdown drives and a pair of 2-point conversions in the second half to tie the game with 2:39 remaining.

Grapevine then drove to the Colleyville Heritage 25-yard line in 11 plays to set up Mueller’s kick.

The Mustangs took a 23-7 halftime lead after the defense produced four turnovers.

Grapevine took a 7-0 lead after defensive end Jarrod Lynn recovered a Panthers fumble. The Mustangs capitalized with a two-play drive capped by Tyler Miller’s first touchdown catch, a 23-yarder from Reed Ryan.

Heritage tied it when Jeff Calvert hit Jake Skinner on a 60-yard touchdown strike.

The Mustangs picked up a field goal, then scored their second TD after Ian Bargsley snagged an interception. Christian Schroeder’s 4-yard run made it 16-7.

The Mustangs made it 23-7 off a turnover just before the half. Lynn snagged his second fumble with 2:44 left to again set up Miller and Ryan, this time from 39 yards out.
