LEWISVILLE — Southlake Carroll dominated Lewisville in every facet of the game Friday on the way to the 52-0 win on the road.
While the offense was as impressive as ever, it was the defense that stole the show for the Dragons (9-1, 5-0 in 6-5A). The Farmers (2-8, 0-5) mustered just seven first downs while the Dragons forced them to punt 10 times."I think defenses win championships and we have a lot of confidence in our defense," Carroll coach Hal Wasson said. "To hold opponents to fewer points than anyone in our district is a great reward for our defense and hopefully it is something we can build off of."Lewisville was held to 138 yards of total offense and just 35 in the second half. The only time the Farmers came close to scoring was when they attempted a 26-yard field goal in the first quarter, but it was blocked. The prolific Dragon offense shredded the Farmers, accumulating 471 yards. But most of that came in the second half.Carroll led 17-0 going into the locker room and Wasson was proud of the way his team rebounded."We self-destructed a couple times early on," Wasson said. "But we fixed that at the half and we had a great finish."Senior quarterback David Piland threw two first-quarter touchdowns, a 44-yard bomb to Ryan Gentry on the second offensive play of the game, and a 13-yard pass to Sean Landers. But after those first two drives, the offense stalled, scoring only a second-quarter field goal. But running back Tommy Avers opened the second half and the flood gates with 65 rushing yards and a touchdown on the first two plays of the third quarter. He finished with 152 yards on 14 carries. The Dragons will face Colleyville Heritage (7-3) in the opening round of the playoffs at 5 p.m. Saturday at Cowboys Stadium.
