DALLAS — Perhaps Arlington Oakridge quarterback Thomas Johnson would want back his second-down pass with 58 seconds remaining.
But as he tried to thread the needle in the end zone, Fort Worth Trinity Valley cornerback Jackson Mellina stepped in front of the throw and preserved a 40-35 victory and the SPC Division II championship for the Trojans on Thursday night at Dallas Episcopal.Mellina turned out to be a one-man wrecking crew for Trinity Valley (10-1). The junior caught 12 passes for 167 yards and three touchdowns.Johnson and Oakridge (9-2) had the lead three times, but couldn’t shake Trinity Valley’s hurry-up offense.Quarterback Trey Harrington completed 37 passes for 451 yards, 340 in the first half, throwing three touchdown passes and running for one. Oakridge was looking to avenge a 35-12 loss last month, and Johnson provided the spark with 254 yards rushing and four touchdowns.But it wasn’t to be. Trinity Valley’s defense stiffened after Johnson opened the second half with a 57-yard touchdown run, and the Owls couldn’t score again.Mellina scored the winning touchdown after a quick drive in the fourth quarter. He slipped behind coverage for a 26-yard pass, breaking a tackle at the goal line.
