This is the way the cosmic auras and football gods should arrange the season every year.

Tonight’s District 6-4A showdown between Aledo (8-1, 6-0 in 6-4A) and Birdville (9-0, 6-0) will crown the district champ in the final regular-season game.

Aledo brings a powerful running game while Birdville counters with a dart-tip-sharp quarterback.

Here’s a look at the important facts heading into the 7 p.m. game at the Birdville Fine Arts/Athletic Complex:

The stars

Aledo running back Johnathan Gray: The sophomore leads the area in Class 4A with 1,541 rushing yards. With 187 carries, Gray averages 8.2 yards per attempt. He sits tops in Class 4A rushing touchdowns as well with 30.

Birdville quarterback Josh Dorman: The golden Hawk helmets match the golden arm of Dorman, who leads the area in passing regardless of classification with 3,255 yards. Dorman has thrown for 43 touchdowns with only four interceptions. With 210 completions on 316 attempts, Dorman boasts an impressive 66.5 completion percentage.

The coach speak

"I don’t know how you beat Aledo. But I know we’ve got to play good football. Basic stuff, tackle on defense, play hard and block on offense. Aledo’s a good football team. They can run and throw with anybody and defensively they can play with anybody in the country. I feel we’re a good football team, and I’m just happy to be in this position to play for the district championship and see what happens."

— Jim Skinner, Birdville

"Defensively, it got a lot tougher this year. Those guys not only throw the ball but they can run pretty well now, too. We’ve got to do a good job stopping the run and pass. I would say most dangerous is stopping the pass. Offensively, we need to have a balanced attack. We need to figure out ways to get the ball in Johnathan Gray’s hands and get him in the end zone."

— Tim Buchanan, Aledo
