IRVING — Terence Newman has 42 tackles, three more than he had all last season, and on pace for a career-high 96. He has three forced fumbles, almost as many as he had in his first six years combined (four).
"Three? Wow! I’m moving to linebacker," Newman said Wednesday. The Cowboys cornerbacks have been aggressive and physical. Mike Jenkins has 31 tackles this season, nine more than he had last year as a rookie."We definitely have been playing physical," Jenkins said. "Everybody is saying that. When we came out of camp, there was a lot of talk about we weren’t physical enough, and we are proving everybody wrong. As long as we keep playing like we are playing now, I think we will be a great defense."The Cowboys cornerbacks face their biggest test with the Philadelphia Eagles’ young receivers. Second-year pro DeSean Jackson has 24 catches for 501 yards and four touchdowns; rookie Jeremy Maclin has 22 catches for 293 yards and three touchdowns. The Eagles have 28 plays of 20 or more yards this season, including nine passing touchdowns. The Cowboys have allowed 12 passing touchdowns this season. Only seven teams in the league have allowed more. "Obviously they’ve got good speed, and they can run," Newman said. "That’s one thing that we have to contend with."Newman shadowed Carolina’s Steve Smith all over the field in Week 3 and limited him to four catches for 38 yards in the Cowboys’ 21-7 victory. But secondary coach Dave Campo said he trusts all three of his cornerbacks to cover Jackson, including nickel back Orlando Scandrick."I feel good about our guys and however they line up," Campo said. "I think they have excellent receivers. Both of their young guys are very good, so I don’t think it really matters too much one way or the other [who draws who]."Williams frustratedRoy Williams has no answers when asked to explain the difference between his numbers and those of Miles Austin. Williams has 14 catches for 249 yards and two touchdowns. Austin has 26 catches for 563 yards and six touchdowns. In the past three games, Austin has caught 21 passes for 482 yards and five touchdowns. Williams has 447 receiving yards and three touchdowns in 16 games since being traded from Detroit."He gets the ball thrown correctly," Williams said. "I’m stretching, falling, doing everything. My balls are everywhere." Williams said he and quarterback Tony Romo are simply not on the same page, surprising to Williams considering the work the two have put in together. "It’s stunning," Williams said. "I anticipated us rolling right now. We are rolling in the win column. But, as far as me and Romo’s production, we are not even close. I’m not mad or anything, by no means. We are just not connecting. I am not going to rant or rave. I’m going to work. I’m just waiting for the switch to cut on one day. Boom!"Active duty for OgletreeRookie receiver Kevin Ogletree was active for just the second time last week. A favorite of owner Jerry Jones, Ogletree will remain active for Sunday’s game at Philadelphia and beyond. He made his lone opportunity count against the Seahawks, catching a short pass and taking it 19 yards on third-and-10 in the fourth quarter for his first career reception."Hopefully, it’s the first of many, and it was good to get that off of my chest and help my team get a nice first down in the fourth quarter," said Ogletree, who went undrafted out of Virginia."I’m trying to gain trust by the coaching staff and by doing that, by coming through when they give you those little opportunities — that was one there — just shows them I want to be in there and help my team."Ogletree is also an option to return kickoffs, although running back Felix Jones is the first option.
