1994: Popeye Jones, NBA rookie game

Popeye Jones remembers the snow piled higher than his 6-foot-9 frame. And he remembers Chris Webber yelling for everyone to get out of the way when he was driving the length of the court for a windmill dunk.

But mostly, Jones remembers his appearance in the 1994 All-Star Weekend rookie game for the pink compact disk that was slid under his hotel room door.

"Prince put a CD under your door in a pink case inviting us to a party at Paisley Park that started at 3 a.m." Jones says. "And the invitation said: Don’t bring any cameras."

Popeye didn’t make that party. He was fast asleep before the bash began. It was one of the many memories Jones has of his first and only appearance at the All-Star festivities.

He was there with Jamal Mashburn, who also played in the rookie game.

"It was the first year they had the rookie game," he said. "I can’t remember all the players they had in it. J.R. Rider was the first guy I saw put the ball between his legs in the dunk contest."

And another thing sticks in his mind.

"I remember not knowing that there was money to be had if you won," he said. "I think it was $5,000 if you won and $3,000 if you lost. We were kind of goofing it off and the other team was playing hard to win."
