Texas connections leave imprint on World Series

The players, coaches and key front-office personnel who are from Texas, went to college in the Lone Star State or have spent time with the Rangers.

Phillies

Clay Condrey, RHP: Not on the active roster, the Texas native went to Navasota High and Angelina CC in Lufkin.

Charley Kerfeld, special assistant to GM: A former Astros closer, he was special assistant to GM with the Rangers in 2006.

Gordon Lakey, director of major-league scouting: Barker resident is an Austin native who went to Texas.

Davey Lopes, first-base coach: Held same spot with the Rangers from 1988-1991 and served as dugout coach.

John Mayberry Jr., OF: Not on the active roster, the Rangers’ first-round pick in 2005 was traded in the off-season for Greg Golson.

Jamie Moyer, LHP: Also not on the active roster, he was acquired by the Rangers with Rafael Palmeiro from Cubs way back in 1989.

Dickie Noles, employee assistance: Pitched for parts of two seasons with the Rangers (1984-85). His SAVES Program is part of Phillies’ community outreach.

Chan Ho Park, RHP: Made 68 starts from 2002-05 for the Rangers, going 22-23 with a 5.79 ERA. Biggest free-agent bust in Rangers history.

Matt Stairs, OF: Yes, he’s still going. Stairs played 26 games for the Rangers late in 2006, hitting .210 with three homers.

Yankees

Jerry Hairston Jr., OF: Batting .194 in 247 at-bats for the Rangers from the middle of the 2006 season through 2007.

Freddy Guzman, OF: Was 3-for-13 for Rangers in 2006 and 2007 before being traded to Detroit for Chris Shelton on Dec. 5, 2007.

Andy Pettitte, LHP: Raised in the Houston area, Pettitte attended San Jacinto JC and pitched for the Astros from 2004-06.

Alex Rodriguez, 3B: 2003 AL MVP with Rangers. Admitted in February to using performance-enhancing drugs during three seasons in Texas.

Mark Teixeira, 1B: The Rangers’ No. 1 draft choice in 2001 was traded to Atlanta in 2007 for five prospects, four of whom were on the Rangers’ roster in 2009.
