Fort Worth crime tax vote

My dog Supergirl does a great job protecting our house. But sometimes she needs backup.

That’s where the Fort Worth Police Department comes in. Like the time when officers arrived in less than four minutes to apprehend the drunken guy who was banging on my door until he came in the house. We especially need to make sure our police are equipped to deal with the increasing criminal activity that sadly accompanies increasing unemployment and a struggling economy.

The Crime Control and Prevention District gives the Fort Worth police much needed resources to do their job effectively to keep our families safe. So make sure my dog (and your dog) has fully equipped backup. Vote to renew the Fort Worth Crime Control and Prevention District on Nov. 3.

No shots for prisoners

I find it absolutely outrageous that prisoners get comparable treatment to law-abiding citizens when it comes to getting the H1N1 inoculation. These prisoners are the bottom of the barrel when it comes to civilization and they were put there because of their illegal acts against law-abiding citizens. The public pays for their incarceration as well as three hots and a cot, and the public should not allow itself to take a back seat to them.

I do agree that prison guards and staff need the shot just as much as all other law-abiding citizens. Perhaps H1N1 could be a tool to thin out these criminal leeches instead of saving them from another crime spree at our expense.

Where’s the justice?

I recently served on a Tarrant County criminal jury where the defendant was a middle-aged repeat offender who was found guilty of robbery. The minimum sentence was 25 years; Judge Ruben Gonzalez sentenced him to 75 years. Now, no one was injured, there was no evidence of a weapon, a small amount of cash and a cellphone were stolen, and the perp was stupid enough to return the cellphone hoping for a $50 reward. He got 75 years, a virtual life sentence.

So what sentence do we give to the criminal who rapes, maims or kills another? Why do I keep reading about killers who get five- to 10-year sentences? Where is the justice?

Be prepared

The letter writer who attended the Alliance Air Show in Fort Worth must have been using a portable toilet for the first time. (See: "Better hygiene, please," Oct. 27) Wait until he goes into one that doesn’t have tissue paper.

Me, I take along tissue paper and a small hand sanitizer lotion at all times when I am in the public, way before the H1N1.

Lax law

I have searched the Texas handbook on driver’s licenses and find that only the commercial driver’s license section requires the driver to speak and read English.

I can’t believe this state is so lax on drivers. Not being able to read English should preclude anyone from driving at all.
