Black Friday

On the day after Thanksgiving, my true love gave to me 12 advertisements, 11 cups of coffee, 10 extra dollars, nine super coupons, eight hours of shopping, seven months to pay off, six weeks of griping, five credit cards, four Eco bags, three new pens, two pads of checks and a trip to the bankruptcy court.

Presidential proclamation

Thanks for printing Abraham Lincoln’s 1863 Thanksgiving proclamation in the Thursday editorial. Wouldn’t it be great today if our president had whatever it takes to issue a similar proclamation acknowledging our thanks to God and our dependence upon him as a nation?

On Bush’s watch

I am proud to be a Vietnam-era veteran, and I love this country. That is why Bob Mehalick’s letter disgusted me. (See: "On Obama’s watch," Nov. 12) He believes that Obama is ruining this country, yet George W. Bush was the one who almost bankrupted the nation. How he missed the consequences of Bush’s leadership or, more accurately, lack of leadership that almost totally ruined this country is beyond me.

Mehalick’s letter would have us believe that Obama is making us a Third World country. How is he doing that? He should appreciate the great job Obama is doing, trying to correct many of the problems Bush helped to create.

Who’s in charge?

Isn’t it time to change the name of Arlington to Jerryland and for His Honor Mayor Robert Cluck to admit who runs the city?

If I were warned not to oversell an event and then did by 100 percent, I would have been fined significantly. For his honor, it’s a learning experience.

If I had proposed a business that caused other businesses to close, I don’t think it would have been approved.

And now we have the Interlochen event cut back because of budget problems. How much of that budget is going to directing traffic for the stadium? Interlochen is an event that makes Arlington unique and brings people to the city in a positive way.

Do you think it would have been cut back if Jerry lived in the area? But Jerry lives in Dallas. I wonder how many Cowboys moved to Arlington.

Healthcare rush

A recent article on healthcare reform cited some 36 million Americans with no health insurance. I assume that many of those are currently receiving little or no medical care, else why the drive for coverage?

I have seen results of no studies evaluating the effect of thrusting up to 36 million new patients upon doctors, clinics, hospitals and other medical facilities. Also, all of us have experienced current waiting-times in medical offices as well as the time required to obtain commitment for an appointment.

Isn’t it logical that those times will inevitably increase? For most causes, shouldn’t one expect one or more effects? It’s not uncommon for one to stumble when rushing rapidly.
