Presidential salutes are proper

I am amazed at the level to which the petty criticism of our president continues to sink.

A recent letter criticizing him for saluting is a good example. The military salute is a show of respect. For the commander in chief to show his respect for our fallen warriors in this way is entirely appropriate and I am sure appreciated by their families.

As for proper protocol for the salute, wearing a military uniform is not a prerequisite. Police and fire units are not military, yet they always salute their fallen comrades as they are laid to rest and when posting the colors.

It is also appropriate for military to salute when in civilian dress. As for precedent, I believe President George W. Bush returned military salutes when boarding presidential aircraft.

Dover photos OK, too

On Monday, a writer said former President George W. Bush went to Dover but didn’t take any photographers. Not true. Bush never went to Dover. But Republicans criticize President Barack Obama for going and for having his picture taken.

When Bush was president, just telling the truth about him was disrespecting the president. Now, Republicans call Obama a racist and socialist and show up at meetings displaying firearms.

I saw Obama take a not-so-friendly question at a town hall and deal with it. Bush’s goons would have thrown that questioner out of the meeting.

The worst president ever lives in luxury in Dallas. Republicans demand that we "move on" and forget about the crimes committed by him and members of his administration, while they promote hatred of Obama. The hypocrisy of Republicans knows no bounds.

Become die-hard Frog fans

I have been a TCU fan for more than 22 years, and words cannot describe the feeling of pride I had in seeing jampacked Amon Carter Stadium and the display of support for the Horned Frogs over the weekend.

Longtime fans can recall days in the ’80s and ’90s when you would be lucky to see 15,000 in attendance. Or worse, when Texas would play at TCU and Longhorn fans viewed TCU and Amon Carter as a rented stadium for their own personal amusement with no regard for the Horned Frogs or Fort Worth.

TCU and Fort Worth, don’t let this moment be a one-time novelty. Embrace the Horned Frogs as your own and develop a chip on your shoulder as a TCU fan. Demand that bars and restaurants show TCU on the big screen because this is the home team. When obnoxious Aggie fans commandeer a Fort Worth establishment with their incestuous chants, fire back with a "TCU FROGS!"

Instead of paying an arm, leg and prostate to sit at the stadium in Arlington, pay a fraction of that price and support the Frogs that truly have done what even the hardiest fan would never have thought possible.
