Vote opens door for 9-11 trials

WASHINGTON — The Senate rejected an effort to prevent civilian trials in U.S. courts for the accused planners of 9-11. The 54-45 vote Thursday opens the door for President Barack Obama to bring Khalid Sheikh Mohammed, the mastermind of the attacks, to trial in federal courts rather than military commissions. — McClatchy Newspapers

New emission rules for PVC firms

LOUISIANA — The Environmental Protection Agency will set new nationwide emission standards for makers of polyvinyl chloride, commonly known as the plastic PVC, under a settlement with environmental groups announced Thursday.

'I-5 Strangler’ gets six life terms

CALIFORNIA — A convicted murderer has been sentenced to six consecutive life terms for killing six women in central California in the 1970s and ’80s. Roger Reece Kibbe, 70, was serving a life sentence for the 1987 strangling of a teen prostitute when he pleaded guilty in September to the six other slayings. Kibbe’s victims were found along Interstate 5, leading to the nickname "I-5 Strangler." — The Associated Press
