Hunter shoots himself in hand

NEW HAMPSHIRE — A deer hunter shot himself in the right hand Saturday while trying to lift his loaded rifle into a tree stand using a rope tied around the .50-caliber muzzleloader. Mark Hensel of the state Fish and Game Department said 63-year-old Robert Lapointe is expected to survive but "shouldn’t have been doing what he did." — The Associated Press

Oil spill in bay being cleaned up

CALIFORNIA — Crews worked Saturday to clean up fuel in San Francisco Bay and care for a dozen birds. Four hundred twenty-two gallons of oil spilled onto the deck of the Panamanian-flagged Dubai Star and into the water after a fuel line ruptured Friday, Coast Guard spokeswoman Sherri Eng said. — The Associated Press

Transit union agrees not to strike

PENNSYLVANIA — The Philadelphia transit system’s largest union agreed Saturday not to go on strike as contract talks continued hours before the start of Game 3 of the World Series, the mayor said. Union workers, who earn an average of $52,000 a year, are seeking an annual 4 percent wage hike. — The Associated Press
