The season opener against Samford provided a good result for quarterback Trevone Boykin and the rest of the team, but TCU coach Gary Patterson said it needs to go in the closet now.

“We’re excited that we did it, and now we need to move forward,” he said. “We don’t need to make too much about it. Now, you do it against Minnesota, you put a couple more cuts in your axe. You do it against SMU, then you put a couple more. You do it for a full year, you’ll see Coach Patterson jump up and kick his heels.”

So there is no heel-kicking yet. But Patterson sounded happy about the work of the offense in practice this week. He said it was most obvious when the first offense went against the first defense in full-speed work.

“Everything we did live, they beat our [rears],” Patterson said.

Boykin review

For Patterson, the most pleasing part of Boykin’s performance against Samford was the zero turnovers.

“He didn’t throw any interceptions,” Patterson said. “Again, you just judge them on Saturdays. He threw the football, managed the offense, didn’t throw any interceptions, threw touchdowns, and scrambled when he needed to.

“Now we need him to do it better next week.”

Patterson said that also applies to receiver Kolby Listenbee, who matched his career total with three catches against Samford, to go along with two touchdowns.

“We’ll see if we do it all year,” Patterson said. “The great ones do it all year.”

‘Good on good’

Patterson said he likes to go “good on good” – first team versus first team, full speed – if possible during bye weeks.

“Everybody else is playing a ballgame. That’s how they get better,” he said. “Ours is, we’ve got to get some good on good.”

He said he tries to hold it to 20 minutes or less to guard against injury. But one benefit is that the full speed allows Boykin to give the first defense a look at some of the speed it will face against other Big 12 quarterbacks.

“When we go good on good, not many scramble better than he does.”

Briefly

• Patterson said punt returner Cameron Echols-Luper, hurt against Samford, has been back at practice since Monday. He was helped from the field favoring his left leg.

• Patterson said the third-teamers will scrimmage Thursday, then the team has off Friday and Saturday before returning Sunday for a “Tuesday” practice.
