Former TCU defensive end and preseason Big 12 player of the year Devonte Fields played in his first junior college game at Trinity Valley Community College in Athens, Texas, on Saturday night, the Athens Daily Review reported.

To read the story, go to athensreview.com.

Fields was permanently separated from TCU in August after a misdemeanor assault warrant alleged that he struck an ex-girlfriend on July 20. He turned himself into authorities on July 24. He admitted to being at the scene but denied the assault.

TCU coaches had agreed to allow Fields to transfer to FCS school Stephen F. Austin, but a TCU disciplinary committee on Aug. 9 found Fields in violation of the school’s code of conduct and suspended him.

NCAA rules require players to sit out a year when they leave a school while they are disqualified or suspended for disciplinary reasons. As a result, Fields chose not to enroll at SFA.

Carolina Panthers quarterback Cam Newton played two seasons at Florida before transferring to Blinn College, which is a member along with Trinity Valley of the Southwest Junior College Football Conference.

Newton went to Blinn to Auburn, where he won the Heisman Trophy.
