In a familiar turn of events, Texas will be without quarterback David Ash this weekend when it takes on BYU after he experienced concussion-like symptoms following Saturday’s win against North Texas.

Ash, who missed 10 games and received a medical redshirt last season after suffering a concussion against BYU, took a hard hit early in the first quarter against the Mean Green, coach Charlie Strong said Monday.

Strong said Ash didn’t experience any problems during the game. However, he called staff later that night to report concussion-related symptoms, which included headaches and dizziness.

If it turns out Ash has suffered another concussion, which would be his third, it will add another mark to his long line of health issues at Texas.

The junior was cleared to participate in spring practice only to be taken off the field again with a foot fracture. In July, team doctors gave Ash full medical clearance to participate in fall camp.

While there has been no determination on how long Ash will be out, more health issues create long-term concerns for the quarterback.

“You always have to be concerned about a young man’s health,” Strong said. “And we would never jeopardize a young man’s health just for the good of this football team. Players come first and their health is always first.”

Sophomore Tyrone Swoopes will replace Ash Saturday against BYU. Swoopes will make his first career start after appearing in only six games last season, completing five passes for 26 yards.

“It’s going to be a new player each week but someone has to step up because adversity is going to hit,” Strong said. “I’m very confident in Tyrone. He can handle it. I’m not concerned about that. The team will rally behind him.”

In addition, senior center Dominic Espinosa, who left Saturday’s game with an ankle injury, is also out indefinitely. He will have surgery on Wednesday, ending his streak of 40 consecutive games started.
