Most thought the Cowboys might lose running back Ryan Williams to another team once they cut him in trimming their roster to 53 on Saturday.

Williams appeared to quiet any concerns about his previous injuries by rushing for 112 yards on 25 carries this preseason, but he went unclaimed through waivers and landed on the Cowboys’ practice squad.

Was he, like many, surprised to slip through waivers?

“I wasn’t surprised,” Williams said. “People are scared, organizations are scared of people who had injuries in the past. I can’t get mad at that.”

Instead, Williams is happy to stay in the Cowboys organization. He believes he’s answered any lingering questions about his health with what he showed in the preseason.

Williams, the Cardinals’ second-round pick in 2011, saw his rookie season cut short when he suffered a torn patella tendon in his knee in the second preseason game. He was then sidelined in 2012 because of a shoulder injury and didn’t get any snaps in 2013.

This preseason, though, Williams got plenty of action. As stated, he carried the ball 25 times and also had nine catches for 66 yards.

“This preseason, I shut a lot of people up,” Williams said. “I shut a lot of doubters up. I closed a lot of questions. I just have to be patient. I know my time is coming, I’ve worked too hard for my time not to come.”

As far as being among the final cuts, Williams said he had a feeling it was coming. The Cowboys considered carrying four running backs on their 53-man roster, but opted to go with three and a fullback, Tyler Clutts.

“I saw that 972 [area code] at 1:56 p.m., and I was like, ‘OK, here it is,’” Williams said. “I came over here and it was sweet and simple. I respected it. I know it’s a numbers’ game.

“But I can wake up everyday and be happy coming to work. I feel all the players in this organization, from top to bottom, whether you’re a Tony Romo or a Ryan Williams, you’re going to get respected. You’re going to get coached. You’re going to get an opportunity to show your stuff.

“They gave me a shot and I ran with it and landed a spot on the practice squad. Hopefully I can move up to the 53.”
