Texas Rangers outfielder Jim Adduci was placed on the seven-day concussion list a day after falling over teammate Rougned Odor while making a catch in foul territory.

Adduci landed on his back and hit his head twice, first on the ground and then against the wall down the right-field line. After Thursday’s game, Adduci said he felt fine and hadn’t been told whether he had a concussion. He stayed at the team hotel on Friday and could resume baseball activities in a few days.

Round Rock infielder Ryan Ruawas called up and started at first base and batted fifth Friday against the Houston Astros. Rua was batting .313 with 36 RBIs in 58 games at Round Rock. Right-hander Phil Irwin was placed on unconditional release waivers to make room for Rua, 24.

Rangers manager Ron Washington said Rua will mostly be used at first base and outfield but could also be used at second. Rua has also played third for Round Rock, but he’s unlikely to see any time there with the Rangers.

“I’ve got to look at him and see what he has to offer,” Washington said. “His bat is the big appeal.”

Rua is the 59th player used by the Rangers in 2014, tying the major league record shared by the 2002 Indians and Padres and the 2008 Padres. With 28 games remaining, the Rangers are likely to break the record in the final month of the season. Rua is the 20th rookie on the active roster, a club record.

Texas is also poised to set a major league record for pitchers used in a season. The Ranger have used a league-high 36 and are likely to tie the 2008 Padres record of 37 when left-hander Derek Holland makes his first appearance of the season on Tuesday at Kansas City.

Holland rejoins team

Holland rejoined the Rangers in Houston on Friday, a day after his sixth and final rehab start at Round Rock. The left-hander has been out all year with an off-season knee injury.

“It’s been a long process,” he said. “I feel really freakin’ good. My job now is to go out there and compete and show them that I can perform.”

Washington said Holland won’t be on a pitch count against the Royals. He threw 98 pitches on Thursday, allowing three earned runs on six hits, including two homers, in 5 2/3 innings.

“He’ll keep the ball until we think we need to go get him,” Washington said. “We’ll let how he performs and the results he’s getting and call it on that.”

Scott Baker, who started Friday’s game, is likely to return to the bullpen to make room for Holland in the rotation, Washington said.

For Holland, returning to his teammates means as much as finally returning to a big league mound.

“That’s my main focus. It means a lot to me. I know the season has been frustrating and it’s been frustrating for myself, as well, but just to be with these guys means everything to me. It’s all about being a Texas Ranger.”

Briefly

• Outfielder Shin-Soo Choo’s elbow surgery to remove a bone spur went well, Dr. Keith Meister reported. Choo is expected to begin rehab in the next few days. Choo was put on the disabled list last week and will miss the rest of the season.

• Injured rookie outfielder Jake Smolinski had the boot on his left foot removed Thursday and has been cleared to begin baseball activities. Smolinski, who has been out with a small fracture in his foot since July 21, will not return to running for about another week, the Rangers say.

• Miles Mikolas, who was scheduled to start Saturday’s game at Houston, will be skipped due to shoulder fatigue. Left-hander Robbie Ross is being called up from Round Rock to take Mikolas’ place. Ross is 2-5 with a 6.06 ERA. Ross made his last big league start on Aug. 14 against Tampa Bay, allowing six earned runs in 41/3 innings.

Quotable

“Houston has had our number so far this year. Just because it may get away this year it’s not like we can’t get it back. It’s not like it’s gone forever. They’ve outplayed us this year so far. I can give them credit for that.” — Rangers manager Ron Washington on the Astros closing in on their first Silver Boot trophy since 2006.
