Missouri Sen. Claire McCaskill will lead a hearing next week to examine the militarization of state and local police following this month’s protests and riots in Ferguson, Mo.

The Democratic senator had called for police in Ferguson to “demilitarize” their response to protestors after the fatal shooting of black teenager Michael Brown by a white policeman on Aug. 9.

Chaired by McCaskill, the Senate’s subcommittee on financial and contracting oversight will use the hearing to review federal programs that provide surplus military equipment to local law enforcement through grants or sales.

The hearing will be held at 10:30 a.m. Sept. 9 in Dirksen Senate Office Building on Capitol Hill.
