Lake Ridge tops Cleburne in opener

CLEBURNE The Mansfield Lake Ridge Eagles coasted to a 49-14 win over Cleburne at Yellow Jacket Stadium on Friday.

Cleburne fumbled the opening kickoff, which was a forecast of what was to come for the Yellow Jackets, who committed six fumbles (lost five) and had one interception.

The two teams combined for more than 30 penalties and nearly 300 penalty yards, along with nine turnovers.

The Eagles jumped out to a 21-0 lead before the Jackets got on the board. The first Lake Ridge score came on a 49-yard run by Duke Carter on fourth down. Carter later scored on a 58-yard run in the third quarter.

Lake Ridge used its run game well. Quarterback Jett Duffey's gained 114 yards with two rushing touchdowns, and Carter gained 154 yards with his two scores.

In the passing game, Duffey connected with receiver Tre McCoy for a pair of touchdowns, with one coming from 47 yards out.

The Eagles' defense limited Cleburne's ground game to 17 yards on 18 carries while Lake Ridge churned out 318 rushing yards on 48 attempts.
