Despite “uphill battle”, Jones says Garrett won’t be graded on the curve

Owner Jerry Jones readily acknowledges that the Dallas Cowboys are facing an “uphill battle” to success in 2014 because of a lack of proven performers on defense.

Yet, Jones says that would not be used as an excuse when grading lame-duck coach Jason Garrett after the season. Garrett is in the final year of his contract and has a 29-27 record since taking over in the middle of the 2010 season.

The Cowboys have missed the playoffs in each of the last four years and are coming off three consecutive 8-8 seasons.

Jones understands the uphill battle that Garrett has in trying to break the playoff-less streak, and thus salvage his job. But if Jones were grading on a curve, he would have already given Garrett an extension.

So Garrett remains firmly on the hot seat in 2014.

“If I said that, I would have given him a contract,” Jones said. “And that’s not how we’re operating here. In no way, I have shut that door. I have already decided that we would operate this year with his contract status the way it is.”

Jones wouldn’t guarantee a new deal after the season for Garrett and the coaching staff, which includes all but two members in the last year of their contracts as well.

“I didn’t say that either,” Jones said. “I’m just saying and really I don’t even know that. I’m just saying as we sit here right now and as we enter the season, then I thought it was in the best interest of the team for us to keep the status of the coaches’ contracts the way that they generally are across the board. And I haven’t changed that from the way you started training camp.”
