Running back Alazai Goodlow had 28 carries for 162 yards and a touchdown as Fort Worth Carter-Riverside knocked off Dallas Conrad 27-20 on Thursday in season-opening action at Scarborough-Handley Field.

Goodlow scored midway through the second quarter to give the Eagles a 14-6 lead.

Conrad pulled within 24-20 in the second half before Carter-Riverside (1-0) tacked on Alexis Flores’ 36-yard field goal late in the fourth to put the game away.

Flores recorded two interceptions on the night, caught a 30-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Vincent Luna and kicked two field goals.

Carter-Riverside had 243 yards offense and Goodlow did most of his damage in large chunks. He had 13 carries that went for 7 yards or more.

Luna completed seven passes for 73 yards and two touchdowns, including one to Flores that got the offense rolling for Carter-Riverside.

After Conrad (0-1) had taken a 6-0 lead, Riverside staged a nine-play 54-yard drive on which Luna found Flores breaking across the middle to make it 7-6.

Goodlow’s 6-yard touchdown run came after Michael Gentry returned a Conrad punt 43 yards to the Chargers’ 24-yard line.

Conrad kept it close most of the game, but never seemed to find offensive rhythm.

Defensive back Junior Dorbah stepped in front of a Luna pass and returned in 92 yards to draw within 24-20.

Chargers quarterback Damian James rushed for 103 yards but couldn’t score on three possessions inside Carter-Riverside territory.
