Labor Day weekend in Bedford means hanging out on a blanket listening to the blues and eating barbeque.

Robert Cray, winner of five Grammys, is the headliner for the Bedford Blues & BBQ Festival, Friday through Sunday, which also includes 85 teams taking part in the Kansas City Barbeque Society cook-off.

The public gets to judge the barbeque Saturday during the people’s choice competition.

Two stages will showcase bands including the Barron Brothers and Petty Theft, a Tom Petty tribute band that open the festival at 6 p.m. Friday. Saturday’s lineup includes Joe Louis Walker, Royal Southern Brotherhood and Robert Randolph & the Family Band.

On Sunday, the lineup includes Nathan and the Zydeco Cha-Chas, with Shemekia Copeland and Robert Cray wrapping it up.

Wendy Hartnett, events coordinator for Bedford, said the bluesfest, sponsored by Texas Health Harris Methodist Hospital Hurst-Euless-Bedford, drew 17,000 people last year.

Hartnett said the visitors should bring blankets and lawn chairs to sit under the trees across from City Hall.

There is also tent seating, and passes can be purchased online, she said.

For something a little different, festival goers can check out the DWI Not So Fun House, a carnival-style trailer featuring arcade games that simulate the effects of alcohol and driving. Sponsored by the Texas Department of Transportation and in connection with its “Drink. Drive. Go to Jail” campaign, the trailer will be on display from 6-10 p.m. Friday.
