An Eastern Hills High School student was killed Wednesday afternoon after she jumped onto Interstate 30 from the Beach Street overpass and was hit by a passing vehicle, officials said.

The student’s name had not been officially released by late Wednesday. Social media postings said she was a 17-year-old senior.

Clint Bond, a Fort Worth school district spokesman, confirmed the death and said that grief counselors will be at the school today.

Investigators are treating the death as a suicide, and the driver of the vehicle that hit the teenager is cooperating with police, said officer Sharron Neal, a police spokeswoman.

The incident occurred shortly after 1 p.m. Westbound lanes of the interstate were closed until 3:45 p.m.

Bond said school district wasn’t notified until late in the afternoon, and then counselors began notifying Eastern Hills teachers.

“Obviously we are all saddened by this tragic loss,” he said.

Staff writers Monica Nagy and Domingo Ramirez Jr. contributed to this report.
