Television’s brightest stars came out in grand style Monday night for the 66th Primetime Emmys. The red carpet fashion included casts of characters decked out in the hottest designers and trends. While there were a few misses, the night mostly provided lots of hits. Here are our picks for best and worst, as well as some of our favorite trends.

Julia Louis-Dreyfus

Veep star Julia Louis-Dreyfus, winner for best lead actress in a comedy series, proved that her style skills are as impressive as her comedic skills when she showed up to the Emmys in this slinky red gown by Carolina Herrera.

Taylor Schilling

From Litchfield to the red carpet — Orange Is the New Black star (and first-time nominee) Taylor Schilling proved that she cleans up pretty nice when she stepped out in a stunning beaded number from Zuhair Murad’s fall 2014 collection.

Lizzy Caplan

Masters of Sex star Lizzy Caplan looked a far cry from her Mean Girls alter ego Janis Ian when she hit the red carpet in a glamorous Donna Karan Atelier gown. With its flowing train, it brought just the right amount of drama.

Lena Dunham

Love her or hate her, no one can deny that when it comes to fashion, Girls star Lena Dunham certainly keeps it interesting. Unfortunately for her, the Giambattista Valli ensemble she wore to this year’s awards was described as looking like everything from a bubblegum snow cone to Strawberry Shortcake’s quinceañera dress.

Laura Prepon

There’s an old tenet in fashion that goes, “Wear the clothes — don’t let clothes wear you.” If only Orange Is the New Black star Laura Prepon had heeded these words — it might have saved us from this Gustavo Cadile creation.

Sarah Paulson

If there’s one thing American Horror Story: Coven star Sarah Paulson knows, it’s how to give a good scare. And, boy, was her Armani Prive gown one big fright, from its massive amounts of tulle to its chickenpox-like red dots.

Ear cuff

The ear cuff (worn single or on both ears) was the jewelry of choice for many of the women who walked the red carpet. Mad Men’s January Jones, Orange Is the New Black’s Samira Wiley and The Mindy Project’s Mindy Kaling all got in on the trend, wearing glitzy, eye-catching ear pieces.

Ladies in red

Most of us might stay away from wearing red to an awards show, to avoid blending in with the carpet. But that didn’t stop the sea of ladies that donned the shade to last night’s Emmys. Octavia Spencer, Minnie Driver and Christina Hendricks all hit high notes in red gowns.
