The starter at quarterback for TCU is apparently going to remain a mystery until game time on Saturday.

“When we run out, you’ll see who runs out in the huddle,” coach Gary Patterson said Monday in a conference call with reporters.

That was all he said on the subject as the Horned Frogs get ready to open the season against Samford in a 6 p.m. kickoff Saturday at Amon G. Carter Stadium.

But last week, Patterson said both Trevone Boykin and Matt Joeckel would play. Patterson declined to pick a starter because he didn’t want Samford to be able to prepare for one quarterback instead of two.

Responding to another question, Patterson said the quarterback position is one that he is paying a lot of attention to as the offense transitions to an uptempo style of play.

“You’re playing a new offense,” Patterson said.

Coaches praised

Patterson said he’s been happy with the working relationship of co-offensive coordinators Doug Meacham and Sonny Cumbie, not only with each other but also the rest of the staff.

“To be honest, it’s been great,” Patterson said, asked to describe their work so far. “You have coaches here who won a Rose Bowl. Really, both Sonny and Doug, working with Rusty Burns, Jarrett Anderson, Curtis Luper — the group, some of them knew each other beforehand — working together’s been awesome.

“I think they’ll keep refining what they want and how they do it as they go forward.”

Patterson said Meacham and Cumbie have given his defense a lot to work on.

“They’ve given us a lot of trouble in the red zone in the scrimmages we’ve had,” he said. “It’s been fun.”

Cornerback rotation

Patterson said the Horned Frogs will have to replace first-round NFL draft pick Jason Verrett “by committee,” and it sounds like the options will grow as the season goes on.

Senior Kevin White and redshirt freshman Ranthony Texada are listed as the starters, with Nick Orr, Corry O’Meally, Torrance Mosley and Travoskey Garrett as the backups.

“We probably have a three-man rotation at corner. I think by the end of September, we have a chance to have a four-man rotation,” Patterson said.
