Brandon Carr got his first taste of pads Tuesday when he became full-go for practice after missing the first 18 days of training camp to be with his dying mother. He’ll get his first taste of the emphasis on defensive holding Saturday when the Cowboys play the Dolphins.

Officials have flagged the Cowboys for eight defensive holds, one illegal contact and one illegal use of hands in two preseason games.

“I’m going to find out Saturday how hard it really is,” Carr said. “I don’t know. I might have to break some habits of just playing physical and aggressive down the field but the name of the game is you’ve got to be able to adapt to it. Rules are rules.”

Officials have called 104 defensive holding penalties, 70 illegal use of hands and 55 illegal contact penalties so far this preseason, according to ESPN stats. Carr, like fans, wonders whether the flurry of flags will continue into the regular season.

“I hope not,” Carr said. “It’s going to be some long football games. You’re going to have to watch a game for four hours, that’s on y’all.”
