Rolando McClain on first-team snaps: I’m making progress, but I’m not there yet

Rolando McClain got work with the first team in practice Tuesday and will get reps with the starters in Saturday’s third preseason game against the Dolphins. It was deserving after his huge game against the Ravens last Saturday when he had a team-leading six tackles and a forced fumble.

It was McClain’s first game action since 2012 when he retired twice last season as a member of the Ravens.

McClain, picked eighth overall by the Raiders in 2010 before being cut three years later with the dual labels of bust and malcontent, admits being excited in a weird kind of way at playing football again.

“It felt weird, but at the same time, it felt good just to get back out there,” McClain said. “It felt weird cause it’s been a while, man. I knew I would be playing football again one day once I made the decision. I didn’t ever think it would be with the Cowboys.”

McClain felt good about his effort against the Ravens, but he is taking it one day at a time. He knows his every move is being watched for his work ethic and desire as well as his play.

McClain believes he is making progress but puts little stock in the first-team reps he’s getting because he says he still has a long way to go.

“It’s no big deal right now,” McClain said. “I just have to practice and work and keep working. I’m making progress but I’m not there yet. I still have a lot of work to do.”
