Signs are pointing to Bruce Carter losing his starting job as the weakside linebacker.

The Cowboys have gushed about Rolando McClain, the latest being owner and general manager Jerry Jones during a KRLD radio interview Tuesday, and McClain then took first-team snaps at middle linebacker during practice.

That meant Justin Durant slid over to the weakside with Kyle Wilber playing the strongside. Does Carter feel like he’s being demoted?

“Not necessarily,” Carter said. “Talking to [linebackers coach Matt Eberflus], he basically said that all three positions are open. So you’ve just got to go out there and compete.”

Carter is coming off a disappointing season in which he was benched twice, and has yet to impress in training camp. That’s why the Cowboys are exploring their options and coach Jason Garrett has said they’ll go with the three best linebackers when the season begins.

Carter hopes he can claim one of those spots.

“For anybody, you’ve just got to go out there and work hard it,” Carter said. “Prove to your coaches and especially your teammates that you’re going to be the best guy for that position. Just keep going out there and battling.”
