TCU notes: Boykin, Joeckel will both play QB in season opener

TCU is going to use both Trevone Boykin and Matt Joeckel at quarterback in the season opener, coach Gary Patterson said.

Patterson said the coaches wanted to pick one following the second scrimmage, but instead have opted to use both, in part to keep season-opening opponent Samford in the dark.

“Why let them prepare for a drop-back guy? Why let them prepare for just a guy that can run? Cause both are going to play,” Patterson said after practice Monday.

He said neither quarterback was as sharp in the second scrimmage as they were in the first — “both were 11 or 12 of 18,” he said — but that the offense operated well in the red zone and that the quarterbacks avoided sacks. He said there were four touchdowns and two interceptions from the No. 1 offense.

Patterson downplayed the idea of special packages for each quarterback, but agreed it’s no secret which quarterback is a classic thrower and which is a superior runner.

“They’ll run the same offense, but there are some running plays that the other guy does better,” he said. “Every run play has a pass off of it, so a taller guy has a chance of handling the pass part of it better than the run part of it sometimes.”

Special practice

Patterson said he called a special teams practice on Sunday, the players’ day off. It was only 30 minutes, but it was enough to get his message across.

“We had some guys not do what we needed to do on Saturday,” he said.

The whole team had to come out for the practice.

“They got the point,” Patterson said.

It may or may not have been related, but Patterson called Monday’s practice “very competitive.”

Pre-game routine

Patterson said the team will practice its pre-game routine this week.

“We’ll actually have a Thursday practice on Friday, and then we’ll have a Friday practice,” he said. “Then we’ll go over to the hotel. We’ll eat like we do pregame. We’ll have our video test, chapel. The next morning, we’ll get up, we’ll go over pregame — what we’re gong to eat, how we’re going to talk, what we’ll say.

“We’ll come over, we’re going to have them dress; we’ll do everything. Everything will be a run-through so when we do it next Friday and Saturday, we’ll be ready to go.”

Game time is 6 p.m. Aug. 30 for the season opener at home against Samford.

Injury update

Offensive lineman Frank Kee and defensive lineman James McFarland returned to practice. Kee had a shoulder injury. McFarland had a hamstring injury.
