The plan for Tony Romo is the same

Tony Romo’s surgically repaired back responded well to the 16 snaps he took Saturday, Jason Garrett said Monday, but the practice plan hasn’t changed for the quarterback.

The Cowboys will continue to be cautious with Romo, who sat out five of 16 training camp practices.

“I would say same [plan],” Garrett said. “We’re going to have good practices this week, and we’re going to get after it, and everybody’s going to be a part of that. Any of the guys who are coming off injuries, you want to make sure they’re able to handle the work, and if not we’ll back them off a little bit.”

Romo completed 4 of 5 passes for 80 yards and a touchdown in two series. He took 16 snaps, with two plays nullified by holding penalties. It was his first game action since Week 16 against Washington on Dec. 22.

“I think he felt comfortable,” Garrett said. “The one play for me that stood out was the one where he climbed the pocket and threw it Dez [Bryant]. His eyes were up. You tell he just felt what was going on. He just had a really good feel for it. He felt like himself on that particular play. And even on the other play, where he extended it a little bit, where he kind of worked his way here, then came back to the left and then eventually threw it back to Hanna, those are things we’ve seen from him. Again, his eyes are up. They’re down the field. His eyes were really good on the touchdown to Dez. He kind of looked over here. Then, his eyes came back to the middle, held the safety and threw the ball up the sideline. It looked like he was comfortable out there, seeing things, moving around and feeling things in the pocket.”

Romo underwent surgery for a herniated disk on Dec. 27, missing the Week 17 game against the Eagles. Garrett said Romo feels “fine” after his return to action.

He and the starters will get their final preseason action Saturday against the Dolphins. They will sit out the preseason finale.
