The quest for perfect eyebrows can be a difficult one, but given the right tools it can be accomplished. As someone who has naturally thick eyebrows, I regularly use an eyebrow gel to make sure that my unruly hairs are kept in line and that the eyebrow powder I use to define my eyebrow stays set.

In the past I’ve used eyebrow gels by brands like M.A.C Cosmetics and NYX Cosmetics, but on a recent trip to Ulta I decided to switch things up and try Anastasia Beverly Hills Beauty Genius Clear Waterproofing Gel.

Created by eyebrow guru Anastasia Soare (her celebrity clients include Jennifer Lopez, Heidi Klum and Kim Kardashian), the Anastasia Beverly Hills line is full of top-notch eyebrow grooming products that promise to give you the perfect set of eyebrows.

According to its product description, the gel was developed to bond, seal and waterproof any powder makeup. At $18, it was more expensive than any other eyebrow gel I’d purchased, but given the Anastasia brand’s reputation, I figured it was worth a try.

First impression

Before I bought it, I thought the Beauty Genius Clear Waterproofing Gel was strictly for taming eyebrows and setting eyebrow powder (that’s what you get when you shop in a hurry).

It didn’t occur to me that it could be used for something else until I unscrewed the top and realized that instead of a spooly brush, the wand had a flat tip. At the time, it seemed an inconvenience; later, it made sense.

The gel is formulated for use on eyebrows, eyelids, face, lips — anywhere on your body. I had intended to use it on my eyebrows but was wary of using it on other areas.

For instance, I worried that using a gel product as an eye shadow sealant might add extra grease to my naturally oily eyelids, and that using it as a lipstick sealant might produce an unpleasant feeling (or taste). To give a thorough and honest review, however, I knew I’d have to set aside my reservations.

I ended up applying the gel directly to my eyebrows after filling them in with powder and to my lips after applying a heavily pigmented lip balm.

Fortunately, the formula didn’t feel sticky, although it was a tad greasy. I must confess, I wasn’t comfortable with the idea of using it on my eyelids, so I decided instead to put a large streak of eyeshadow on my wrist to see if it could last the whole day with the use of the gel.

Fab or flub?

Fab! As a sealant for pigments, Anastasia Beverly Hills Beauty Genius Clear Waterproofing Gel gives your makeup long-lasting power.

Used on eyebrows, it does a great job of setting eyebrow powder and keeping unruly eyebrow hairs looking groomed all day.

Despite being a gel, it doesn’t make eyebrows feel stiff and crunchy, and in my opinion, that fact alone makes it better than most of the eyebrow mascaras on the market.

While I’ve never used nor had an interest in using a lip sealant, this gel did a great job of keeping my lip color fresh. It helped prevent smudging, and my lip color lasted longer than normal.

As for that big splotch of eyeshadow on my wrist? It lasted through an entire workday. Bottom line, this product has staying power.
