Rangers rally falls short

After falling behind 5-1, the Texas Rangers put up three runs in the eighth, but fell short as they opened their three-game series with the Los Angeles Angels with a 5-4 loss Friday night at Globe Life Park.

Kole Calhoun's 13th home run of the season, a three-run shot in the fifth, broke a 1-1 tie as the Angels sent the Rangers to their third-straight loss.

Entering the eighth, the Rangers rallied behind four hits and three runs off the Angels bullpen.

Mike Carp and Adrian Beltre had back-to-back RBI-singles while Alex Rios' fielder's choice brought the Rangers within one.

Adrian Beltre went 4-for-4 and drove in two.

Nick Martinez struck out six batters for Texas, but fell to 2-9 after allowing four earned runs on six hits in six innings.

Garrett Richards won his team-high-tying 13th game of the year for the Angels after allowing two runs on seven hits in 7 1/3 innings and striking out seven.
