Yu Darvish seemed to leave the door open Thursday that he may miss more than two starts after being placed on the disabled list.

Texas Rangers manager Ron Washington sounded more certain that his ace will be back on the mound when his 15-day DL stint for right elbow inflammation is complete.

“Nothing more has been discussed along any other lines,” said Washington, who spoke privately with Darvish on Thursday. “[There was] no indication from him that it’s going to be more than 15 days.”

Darvish said before Thursday’s game that he wasn’t too concerned about the injury. But he also sounded doubtful when asked whether he was confident he’ll pitch again in 2014.

“I think I could throw,” he said. “But if that’s going to risk my elbow for the future, I’m not going to take the risk. I’m competitive and I want to to go out there and compete. But I’m also thinking about my long-term situation.”

Darvish won’t throw again until the discomfort subsides, the Rangers said.

When asked whether he’d be available right now if the Rangers were in a playoff race, Darvish paused before saying: “It’s a difficult question. I want to throw, I want to pitch. I think I could if I pushed myself.”

Washington was miffed when asked about Darvish’s response to the playoff-race question and said he doesn’t want to jeopardize Darvish’s future either.

“We’re in a race to win ballgames,” Washington said. “I expect Darvish to pitch on the 25th. Why wouldn’t he? So he’s got inflammation. I’ve got inflammation.

“[It’s] not me to answer for him. I’m not predetermining nothing. Let’s just let the process work and see where it goes.”

Ross to Round Rock

Left-hander Robbie Ross was optioned less than 24 hours after starting Thursday’s game against the Tampa Bay Rays.

Ross was moved back to Round Rock after the Rangers purchased the contract of right-handed pitcher Jon Edwards from Round Rock on Friday. Edwards attended Keller High School and was drafted by St. Louis in 2006.

“We don’t need a fifth starter until we get back from Miami,” Washington said of the decision to replace Ross with Edwards.

Ross was recalled Thursday to start for Darvish and took the loss, allowing six earned runs in 4 1/3 innings.

The Rangers have a full 40-man roster with the addition of Edwards.

Edwards, 26, has a 2.27 ERA with 38 strikeouts and 13 walks in 22 relief appearances since May at Frisco and Round Rock.

Odor finding pitches

Rougned Odor is finally finding good pitches to hit.

The rookie second baseman belted his fifth homer Thursday and is on pace for the best month of his career.

“The only thing I’m trying to do is look for my pitches and that’s what I do every day,” Odor said. “Finally, it came up and it paid off.”

He went 5 for 15 with a home run and pair of RBIs in the four-game series with the Rays. It was his best series since June 16-18 against Oakland, when he was 5 for 12 with a home run and three RBIs.

Briefly

• Left-hander Derek Holland will continue to make rehab starts with Frisco and Round Rock until the minor league season concludes Sept. 1, Washington said.

• Round Rock right-hander Justin Germano was sent to the Dodgers for future considerations.

• Alex Rios was back playing right field Friday for the first time since aggravating his right ankle injury Sunday.
