Boykin slightly ahead of Joeckel for TCU’s starting QB job

TCU coach Gary Patterson always says quarterback evaluation comes from the job done in scrimmages.

After TCU’s second scrimmage Tuesday and after coaches analyzed the film Wednesday, Patterson said junior quarterback Trevone Boykin holds a slight edge over senior transfer Matt Joeckel in the competition for the starting job.

During the scrimmage, Boykin completed 12 of 14 passes. Joeckel connected on 12 of 18.

However, Joeckel threw two touchdown passes to Boykin’s one.

Boykin has not taken any reps at wide receiver, but he has worked out as a punt returner, Patterson said.

The offense was the highlight of the scrimmage, scoring five times in six attempts inside the red zone, which included the three touchdown passes. Patterson said the first-team defense gave up one of the touchdown passes and the other two came against the second team.

“They had a lot better day moving the football and played well in the red zone,” Patterson said of the offense.

While the defense didn’t shine, Patterson tipped his cap to the offense, which made the plays needed against its defensive teammates.

TCU will hold its final scrimmage Saturday morning.

First impressions

True freshman offensive lineman Austin Schlottman has worked his way into the two-deep depth chart and should see his share of playing time this season.

Patterson said Schlottman was recruited for his versatility at both guard and center, and he is No. 2 on the depth chart at center.

“That’s why we recruited him,” Patterson said. “We had him snapping in camp. He did all that stuff for us. That was an evaluation.”

Schlottman also could spell junior guard Brady Foltz.

Walk-on sophomore wide receiver Daniel Walsh was moved onto the starting kickoff unit for his work on scout team over fall camp.

“Walsh did an unbelievable job on scout team special teams,” Patterson said. “We moved him over to our starting kickoff. We haven’t blocked him for two weeks.”

Freshman in LB mix

Patterson said the linebacker rotation will be between senior Marcus Mallet, senior Paul Dawson and senior Jonathan Anderson, but freshman Ty Summers is making a push, despite hitting a bit of a wall in Tuesday’s scrimmage.

“Ty has come on,” Patterson said. “He did some things today. He’s understanding more. By the middle of the season, he’ll be here — maybe by October.”

Injury update

Freshman wide receiver Emanuel Porter, sophomore defensive tackle Tevin Lawson and redshirt freshman tight end Bryson Burtnett sat out Wednesday with minor injuries. All are expected to practice Thursday. Junior guard Frank Kee will need another week to recover from a shoulder injury.

Briefly

• Freshman lineman Ty Barrett will redshirt this season to drop some weight and get in better shape.

• Between redshirt freshman running backs Kyle Hicks and Trevorris Johnson, neither has really stood out, Patterson said.
