Coppell

District 7-6A

Last season: 9-2 (5-0 in District 5-5A)

Key players: RB Charles West (5-10, 185), OL Connor Williams (6-4, 272), QB Skyler Bonneau (5-11, 205), LB Bo Anderson (6-1, 225), DB Jacob Murray (6-3,185), DL Chris Biggurs (6-3, 185)

The big picture: Coppell is going through a coaching change this season, but shouldn’t lose a step because Mike DeWitt moves into the role after five years as the Cowboys’ defensive coordinator. DeWitt said strategically, the program will remain as is because all but four coaches returned from last season. Coppell is up against what could be tabbed as the most challenging district in the state, with teams such as state-ranked Southlake Carroll and Euless Trinity. The Cowboys, however, return key players in some of the most important positions, making them as much of a contender as any of the other 7-6A powerhouses. Running back Charles West will handle the ground game, coming off a 1,193-yard, 15-touchdown season last year. Senior quarterback Skyler Bonneau will lead the offense after posting 1,215 passing yards and 16 touchdowns. Coppell will remain a team focused on defense, with its ability to put a physical team on the field.

Quotable: “We want to keep the same philosophy. We want to play really good defense and be physical. Offensively, we want to try and run the football and all that kind of stuff.” — coach Mike DeWitt

“We think obviously it’s a tough district. We’ve played a lot of those teams before. We’ve still got to preach to our kids that it’s one week at a time. Every district ballgame is important. You can’t really look past somebody and look forward to a game with so-and-so, because you don’t take anything for granted.” — DeWitt

Notable: This season will be the first matchup between Coppell and Euless Trinity since the 2010 Class 5A Division I quarterfinal in which both teams met with undefeated records at a soldout Dragon Stadium in Southlake. Trinity won 41-40 on the last play of the game — the Trojans’ only lead of the game.
