Brandon Carr took the plunge and got married in May. He and his wife, Shatory, are enjoying the newlywed stage, although he’s quickly learned a few things that make married life go more smoothly.

His five tips for marriage:

1. Compromise.

2. Pick your battles wisely.

3. Learn to be selfless.

4. Learn how to make sacrifices.

5. Be mentally tough.

“That’s it,” Carr said. “There you go.”

Well, what’s the most difficult?

“Compromise for sure,” Carr said. “It’s difficult for me because I’m stubborn.”

Brawling it out

Jason Garrett stated that he hoped to see only football, not fights, when the Cowboys and Raiders practiced together. Players apparently forgot that message once drills got underway.

An all-out brawl broke loose between the Cowboys’ defense and Raiders’ offense during team drills. Cornerback Morris Claiborne form-tackled Raiders tight end Mychal Rivera, and then taunted the Raiders fans briefly.

That didn’t sit well with Raiders receiver Greg Little, who got into Claiborne’s face. It didn’t take long for a fight to follow.

“It was just one of those things where it’s a ‘thud’ practice,” Claiborne said. “In the open field ... it’s hard to kind of get a judgment off that. But when [Rivera] dropped his shoulder, I thought that was my cue to go in for the tackle.”

Another fight broke out on the opposite field when Raiders linebacker Justin Cole ripped off the helmet of Cowboys fullback J.C. Copeland.

Asked if he thought about shutting it down after that scuffle, Cowboys owner Jerry Jones said: “I don’t know about that. Seriously, this was great. Great enthusiasm, atmosphere. It was hard to believe that this was a practice.”

Stars talk

NBA Hall of Famer Magic Johnson addressed the Cowboys before Tuesday’s practice, and legendary baseball manager Tommy Lasorda spoke with them after.

Quarterback Tony Romo particularly enjoyed hearing from Johnson, as the two share a mutual admiration for one another.

“He had some great words of wisdom,” Romo said. “He just has a way to connect with people. Any time someone like that speaks, you’re going to hang on every word, so it was really special and great to see him.”

Johnson similarly gushed about Romo.

“People don’t realize he is smart,” Johnson said. “He is an all-around athlete. I hope people understand he puts up 400 yards, and he gets all the grief. He can’t play defense. I’m always defending him. I’m upset when they criticize him. He plays a great game, but they expect him to do everything.”

Quote of the day

“It’s Cowboys-Raiders. Anytime you get two teams together those things happen. That’s kind of typical when you bring two teams together during training camp. I think it’s all good and good work for us.” — tight end Jason Witten, on the brawls during Tuesday’s practice
