Melton’s injury doesn’t worry the Cowboys

Defensive tackle Henry Melton is listed as day to day with a groin "tweak", according to Dallas Cowboys coach Jason Garrett.

“We don’t think it’s too, too serious. We’ll just evaluate it as it goes,” Garrett said.

Melton is not expected to practice this week, likely ruling him out of Saturday's home preseason opener against the Baltimore Ravens.

Owner Jerry Jones remains unconcerned about Melton missing the Ravens game. His only focus is that the former Texas star is ready for the season opener against the San Francisco 49ers. Jones called the groin a week to week thing, but nothing to keep him out of the 49ers game.

Jones said there was a chance Melton, who was sidelined last season with a knee injury, would have been held out of the entire preseason as a precaution.

Melton sat out the preseason opener last Thursday and would only play Week 3 against the Miami Dolphins on Aug. 23 if at all. No starters would play in the Aug. 28 preseason final against the Denver Broncos.

The big surprise is that rookie seventh-round pick Ken Bishop is the one getting snaps with the first team in Melton's absence. That is partly due to the continued absence of Terrell McClain with a sprained ankle. But also credit the rookie from Northern Illinois, who came to camp pigeonholed as a nose guard, but has showed the athleticism and quickness to the play Melton's three-technique spot.

“He’s just done a lot of good things since he’s been here. He’s a big guy. He’s athletic. He’s got a little snap to him, both in his upper body and his lower body.” Garrett said.

Bishop put his relentlessness and quickness on display last Thursday against the San Diego Chargers when he ran down field to tackle a running back from behind. He was flagged for a horse collar tackle on the play, but the effort stood out to Garrett.

“That’s the way he’s played – he’s been a guy who’s been in the pack there with the rest of the defensive linemen, but somehow, some way he gets out of the pack and he’s chasing the football,” Garrett said. “That’s kind of his temperament, his demeanor, and he’s been that way since the start of it. So, that and his playmaking ability, I think warrants an opportunity.”
