Tony Romo looks more like himself

OXNARD, Calif. Less than a week after assistant coach Wade Wilson said Tony Romo was having problems with the deep ball following back surgery, the Cowboys quarterback had his best day of training camp.

Rest and time off made a huge difference, coach Jason Garrett said.

Romo had four consecutive days off before his sterling work in Saturday’s practice. That included sitting out the preseason opener against the Chargers and the days off before and after the game.

“He looked like himself,” Garrett said. “Having the time off prior to the (San Diego) game and after the game I think was good for him.

“Our thing all along with him has been monitor the work, communicate, get great feedback and then make our next best decision. I think we’ve done that up to this point.”

Garrett acknowledged the problems with the deep ball that Wilson pointed out. But he said it was all part of coming back from an injury and the natural progression of your body and throwing mechanics.

“I think its all a normal progression and you will see physical manifestations of them not being quite themselves, or hey, that looked like the normal guy that we know,” Garrett said.

Romo definitely looked like the normal guy the Cowboys were familiar with Saturday, not only making connections on the deep ball but how he picked up bad snaps, moved in the pocket and zipped the ball down the field.

“He just looked like himself more to me, the expressions on his face,” Garrett said. “He didn’t look quite like he was working through something. He’s a very intuitive athlete. He has great instincts and feel for what’s going on but also for his technique. We’re working through all that stuff and I thought (Saturday) he was most like himself.”
