OXNARD, Calif. — The Cowboys signed running back D. J. Adams, and he is expected to be at the afternoon practice.Adams, an undrafted rookie from Portland State, is needed to bolster a running back corps thinned by a quad injury to rookie Ben Malena. Malena was injured in Thursday’s 27-7 preseason-opening loss to the San Diego Chargers and was placed on the no-recall waivers with the waived/injured designation. “We don’t tihnk it’s good,” Cowboys coach Jason Garrett said of Malena’s injury. “He hurt his quad and his tendon and probably a pretty serious injury. So he’s going to be out for a little bit. He’s done a really good job up to this point. We wanted to see him play. Unfortunately, that’s not going to happen this preseason. At some point, we might want to give him a chance again.”Adams signed with the Chargers after the draft but was cut in June. He began is college career at Maryland before transferring to Portland State, rushing for 1,600 yards and 19 touchdowns as a senior. The Cowboys also are expected to sign a kicker Saturday.
