With a depleted secondary, rookie cornerback Terrance Mitchell found himself starting opposite B.W. Webb on Thursday night in San Diego.

Mitchell felt he did “all right.” The seventh-round draft pick out of Oregon drew a couple holding calls and knows he has to clean up his technique guarding receivers.

“On one of the penalties, I was like, ‘What?’” Mitchell said. “I didn’t even grab him or anything. The referee explained to me this year they’re calling the game real tight. But I just have to stay focused and keep working hard.”

Mitchell said he has to keep his game lower, working on his footwork and limiting the use of his hands.

But he had a few notable plays, as well. Mitchell recovered a fumble deep in the end zone during the first quarter, a play that happened to follow one of Mitchell’s holding penalties.

Mitchell said he happened to be in the right place at the right time for it and even thought about trying to take it out and go the distance.

Could he have made it?

“Heck yeah,” Mitchell said, smiling. “That’s why I tried to get up out of there, but the smart thing for the team is to get down so nothing happens.”

Safety Barry Church, who sat out with an injury, chuckled when asked about Mitchell’s “attempt” at a 109-yard return, and said coach Jason Garrett might single him out in a meeting.

“Oh, man, I thought he was going to take it out of there, but he did the smart thing,” Church said. “He’s definitely going to get chewed out for that in the meeting. Coach Garrett is going to tell him to get on the knee ASAP. He’s going to get chewed for that one.”
