This is James Hanna’s third season with the Cowboys, so a touchdown catch has been a long time coming. Hanna caught a 4-yard pass from Brandon Weeden for the team’s only score in a 27-7 loss to the Chargers.

“That’s my first one, man, so that’s obviously nice,” Hanna said. “I’ve been waiting a long time, so I’m happy about it.”

With Jason Witten sitting out, Hanna and Gavin Escobar both started as the Cowboys opened in a two tight end set. Hanna caught two passes for 11 yards from Brandon Weeden.

“Having gone through two other preseasons where I didn’t play a lot with [Tony] Romo, it was nice to have an older guy in there,” Hanna said. “He’s not like a super vet or anything, but definitely it felt pretty comfortable. It was clean, and it was good.”

But as the Cowboys continue to try to hone their tight ends’ blocking skills, Hanna gave up a sack that resulted in a fumble. In the third quarter, he whiffed on a block of Thomas Keiser, who sacked Cowboys quarterback Caleb Hanie and forced a fumble.

Hanna said he would remember allowing the sack more than he would remember scoring the touchdown.

“It’s just frustrating, man,” Hanna said. “It’s preseason, so luckily that one is not going to count.”

Escobar, the second-round pick last year, is competing for more playing time. Escobar played 206 snaps as a rookie, making nine catches for 134 yards and two touchdowns, while Hanna played 315 snaps, making 12 catches for 73 yards.
