Rookie Zack Martin admits he had butterflies before his first NFL game action, even if it was a preseason game.

“It was a little nerve-racking, but once you get in there and get a couple of plays under your belt, you start to calm down a little bit,” Martin said.

The first-round pick played the first series, starting at right guard. The Cowboys moved from their own 20 to the San Diego 40 before a pair of 10-yard penalties set them back.

“It’s the middle of camp, so it’s fun to get out there and go against someone else,” Martin said. “It was just fun to get out there and play in a game.”

Center Travis Frederick, the team’s first-round pick in 2013, said Martin handled himself well his first time out.

“I was terribly nervous the first time out,” Frederick said. “I played a few more snaps than he did. I think from what I can tell, he did a really good job. He was comfortable, confident, which is all the good things you want. Obviously, for all of us, there’s places he can improve; places I can improve, and we’ll see that on film and go from there.”
